Pricing tips
Baking is often a labor of love, but forgetting the cost of a single egg or the hours spent decorating can lead to working for free. Pricing your cakes correctly requires tracking every gram of flour and every minute of oven time.
- Track your recipe yields exactly to ensure your price per slice remains consistent.
- Include the cost of cake boards, boxes, and ribbons in your final material total.
- Factor in the time spent cleaning your kitchen as part of your total labor cost.
Questions
How do I account for expensive cake fillings?
Add each filling ingredient as its own line, with the amount this cake uses and the pack it came from. The calculator works out the cost of just the part you used.
Should I charge for the time the cake is in the oven?
Yes, your time is valuable even when you are not actively mixing. You should also include a portion of your monthly electricity or gas bill in your fixed costs.
What is a healthy profit margin for home baking?
Many bakers aim for a margin that covers both their labor and a surplus for reinvesting in better equipment. The calculator helps you see what remains after all expenses are paid.

How Tagzinho works out your price
Each ingredient costs the share of its pack you use: 500 g of a 2.27 kg bag at $4.29 is $0.94.
Your time and a share of your monthly fixed costs are added to every unit.
The price is solved so that after the marketplace takes its percentage and fixed fee, you still keep your profit margin. Most calculators add the fee last and you end up short.
